About

The Multimodal-5G project addresses the critical connectivity challenges in both rail and maritime transport corridors, ensuring reliable, high-capacity 5G Standalone (5G SA) coverage for passengers, transport operators, and logistics applications. The project aims to demonstrate the transformative potential of 5G SA connectivity in enabling advanced connectivity and seamless multimodal transport for both passengers and freight, optimizing logistics, safety, and operational efficiency. The project focuses on the GR-BG Land-Rail, and Maritime Corridor, establishing an integrated transport network that connects Crete to Piraeus, Athens, and the Bulgarian border town of Simitli via maritime and rail links.

  • Rail corridor: Piraeus – Athens – Thessaloniki – Simitli (BG), ~ 600 km
  • Maritime corridor: Piraeus – Aegean islands- Heraklion, ~ 300 km

Focusing on the GR-BG land, rail, and maritime corridor, the project leverages 5G SA infrastructure to facilitate enhanced integration of transport modes for passengers and freight, across Greece and Bulgaria, fostering connectivity between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas while addressing critical societal and industrial challenges.

The project introduces innovative 5G-enabled use cases that enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of multimodal transport. By focusing on key transport routes and hubs – including Piraeus Port, the Athens-Thessaloniki and Thessaloniki – Simitli rail line, and maritime links to Crete – Multimodal-5G brings advanced digital services to life, addressing the needs of passengers, drivers, logistics operators, and public authorities.

The technological foundation of Multimodal-5G relies on a robust 5G SA infrastructure that integrates advanced communication, IoT, and AI technologies to support a wide range of innovative applications. The project will develop and deploy high-bandwidth, low-latency networks, coupled with edge computing and slicing automation frameworks, ensuring the seamless delivery of services tailored to the unique requirements of transport and logistics. Additionally, the project will incorporate advanced analytics and predictive capabilities to optimize operations, improve decision-making, and enhance the overall performance of transport systems.
